CHARITY OF ANN HOWSDEN

Registered Charity no. 233086

What is the Charity of Ann Howsden?

The Charity of Ann Howsden was established in 1631 when Ann Howsden, whose grave and memorial is in the south-east corner of the churchyard in Hinxton, bequeathed a sizeable estate from which the income was to help ‘the poor and needy of Hinxton’.

Hinxton Parish Council About

What are the current objectives of the Charity?

The Objectives of the Charity were extended and approved by the Charity Commission for England and Wales in 2020 and are currently:

  1. “The relief of persons resident in the Parish of Hinxton who are in need, hardship or distress.”
  2. “To benefit the residents of Hinxton by providing or assisting in the provision of facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the objective of improving the conditions of life of the residents.”

How does the Charity actually meet its objectives?

The Charity owns the four bungalows located at 2,4,6, and 8 Duxford Road and the associated parking spaces.  Three of these bungalows are maintained to provide homes at affordable rents to people with a strong association with Hinxton who might not otherwise be able to live in Hinxton.

The Charity also makes financial gifts to residents of Hinxton, for example Christmas gifts and contributions towards heating costs, ad hoc payments to assist with rent or other living expenses for those suffering a period of financial hardship, payments to

fund educational activities such as swimming lessons or school trips that the family would not otherwise be able to afford.

Charitable donations are also made to organizations or groups that benefit residents of Hinxton. These may be towards core running costs or funding specific projects, for example updating playground equipment, funding village celebrations or educational resources for schools attended by children from Hinxton.

The Charity is happy to consider contributing to the funding of individuals and groups for any purpose that falls withing the Objectives approved by the Charity Commission. All of the Trustees and Officers of the Charity will treat any application for funding or tenancy in the strictest confidence.
